I get it. It’s almost Halloween and you may not be in the mood to slow your horror-movie roll. But classic action film Escape from New York (1981) has been placed on TubiTV’s ‘Leaving Soon’ page, so if you haven’t seen it, you’d better move fast. Also, it was directed by John Carpenter (Halloween (1978), The Thing(1982)), and there ARE mutant cannibals living under the streets, so you can probably slip it in without a massive tonal shift from your late-October lineup.
In 1981’s 1997, the island of Manhattan has been walled off and transformed into a prison city, where criminals are confined and left to their own devices. The President (Donald Pleasence) finds himself a prisoner there when Air Force One crashes, and disillusioned legendary badass Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is fitted with a neck bomb and forced against his will to come to the rescue.

The supporting cast includes a host of great names, including Lee Van Cleef, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, and Ernest Borgnine. The film as a whole is a testament to what made ’80s action great–tongue-in-cheek humor, stunts, practical effects, dark atmosphere, gritty cinematography, brutality, and suspense.
